Background

Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) is a non-profit organisation established to facilitate the creation and development of Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCA) in Southern Africa. PPF is currently supporting the development of conservation areas in Mozambique through partnership agreements with the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC). The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) is financing the One Limpopo One Health (OLOH) project which will be implemented by the Peace Parks Foundation, together with the Administration of the LNP.

PPF therefore wishes to appoint an Agriculture Officer

The position will be based at the Limpopo National Park (LNP) in Massingir which is an essential component of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. The OLOH project aims to contribute to the sustainable and climate change resilient socio-economic development of the communities around the LNP. The aim is to promote the development of agriculture and livestock, sustainable management of natural resources, and socio-community development.

Job Overview

The Agriculture officer must have experience in working in rural development, and be familiar with climate change issues, biodiversity, conservation and organic agriculture, irrigation schemes, drip irrigation, agroforestry, livestock development, and agriculture-livestock integration.

Specific key performance areas will include:

  • Provide support and follow the recommendations established according to the plans and strategies for agriculture and agroforestry during the missions and implement the recommendations.
  • Supervising the actions of agricultural extension workers.
  • Develop and implement programs to ensure the protection of plant communities against insects, pests, plant diseases, and uncontrolled fires.
  • Helping to develop the forestry seedling nursery.
  • Serves as a liaison between all stakeholders.
  • Work with Herding for Health (H4H) and the Livestock Delegations of the Massingir and Mabalane District Economic Activities Departments to set up livestock farming and integration activities.
  • Oversees the inventory, use, and maintenance of the OLOH equipment.
  • Support the French agricultural research and cooperation organisation/the Eduardo Mondlane University/H4H/Technical Assistant in conducting project studies and reports.
  • Monitor and evaluate the success of the agricultural campaign/projects.
  • Prepare agricultural and livestock fairs with the Community Support Program/H4H.
  • Create mechanisms for integrating and compensating local traders.
  • Support the creation of sharing mechanisms for income generation projects.
  • Work with gender officers to identify vulnerable groups.
  • Train community farmers in different methodologies of protection crops.
  • Present monthly reports and produce communication and outreach material.
  • Participate in the selection of beneficiaries for all ongoing projects.
  • Promote and disseminate technologies through tests, results in demonstration fields and pest control.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of experience in agriculture projects.
  • Preferably a degree in either Agriculture and livestock, Agroforest, Zootechnics, or equivalent.
  • Competent in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint is critical.
  • Good knowledge of Portuguese and fluency in English is essential. (Speaking Changana is an advantage.
  • Work experience in natural resource utilisation, land-use management, and local development.
  • Knowledge of subsistence farming systems, crop production, and community-based natural resource methods will be highly advantageous.
  • Valid drivers license.
