Purpose of Job

The Manager Process Safety plays a key role in assuring the safe, predictable, reliable and sustainable operation of all operating assets in Southern Mozambique. This position will be based in Temane and is responsible to lead the process safety management program within Sasol by overseeing the successful execution of the necessary risk management and hazard assessment activities, driving best practice, assessing and recommending competency and training needs; and acting as a champion to advance process safety culture and operational discipline in Sasol. The Manager Process Safety does not only guide the implementation and maintenance of the Process Safety Management (PSM) System but also provides the necessary assurance that all process safety risks associated with facility design and operation are continuously managed at a tolerable or acceptable level. Due to the transverse nature of the position, the Manager Process Safety must collaborate and work with the relevant Asset Operations / Technical Manager(s), Manager SHE Well Delivery, Manager Well Testing, Services and Integrity as well as the Manager Asset Integrity. This position would also be responsible for SME input into key capital projects (Greenfield & Brownfield) where process safety is of importance.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure the implementation and maintenance of process safety governance and processes within Sasol. Contribute to the establishment and review of site PSM related systems and procedures;
  • Oversee process safety related hazard identification and risk assessment studies (ISD, HAZID, HAZOP,PHR, LOPA, QRA, etc.);
  • Provide quality assurance on risk studies conducted by Process Safety Specialists and Practitioners;
  • Communicate findings and recommendations from the site PHA report. Assist operations management with decision-making and formal response to recommendations;
  • Provide operational area land use and spatial planning advice based on MHI QRA, building and facility studies;
  • Track and manage actions from PHA / risk assessments, audits, incident investigations & improvement plans;
  • Oversee the development of site-specific bowties and critical control assurance checklists for loss of containment;
  • Manage and coach Sasol Process Safety Specialists;
  • Support the process safety critical equipment (PSCE) management process and ensure implementation of corrective actions;
  • Provide site emergency response and preparedness program oversight by liaising with external stakeholders. Provide input into the competency profile of the on-site emergency response team.
  • Assist with the development of scenario specific emergency response plans;
  • Conduct 1st and 2nd party PSM assurance audits during drilling and well intervention campaigns;
  • Assist operations to prepare for 3rd party / external audits and insurance engineers’ visits. This involves collecting information, assisting with organising and planning, follow up and tracking the status of corrective actions;
  • Support the operations team with the interpretation of the audit / assessment results and the prioritisation of action plans;
  • Review and approve the classification of process safety incidents. Consolidate and approve month-end figures for FER-SR as required for PSM KPI reporting;
  • Oversee the gathering and processing of monthly PSM KPI data. Construct PSM KPI report, outlining leading and lagging metrics and the necessary justifications;
  • As a subject matter expert, advise and influence management on how to improve process safety performance (plans, targets, lessons learned, best practices, etc.). Assist with the development of a site-specific game plans and track adherence to plan;
  • Ensure that Well Delivery governance documents and processes reflect Sasol Group PSM Element procedure requirements;
  • Ensure compliance to the 5th HSI focus area by overseeing the implementation of the Sasol Process Safety Fundamentals within Sasol;
  • Support the Well Delivery team with technical risk assessments as it pertains to the safe and sustainable operation of producing, suspended and P&A well stock;
  • Represent the PSM interests of Sasol at the Sasol PSM Steering Committee, PSM Managers meeting and Group PSM technical workgroups;
  • Work in close co-operation with the Southern Mozambique Operational Support team in order to prioritize key initiatives where process safety improvement is a key success factor;
  • Develop a monthly report of PSM performance for the SHE Senior Manager and VP SHE.

Formal Education

University Bachelors Degree in Engineering: Chemical or Engineering: Mechanical
